โดยในวันเกิดเหตุนั้น Gaspard ได้พาลูกชายและเพื่อนฝูงไปว่ายน้ำกันที่หาด Venice Beach ทว่าก็เกิดคลื่นรุนแรงจนทางเจ้าหน้าที่กู้ภัยบนชายฝั่งเข้ามาให้การช่วยเหลือเขาและลูกชาย แต่เขาเลือกที่จะให้เจ้าหน้าที่ช่วยลูกชายก่อน และหลังจากที่ลูกชายปลอดภัย เขาก็ถูกคลื่นซัดหายไป จนพบร่างในเมื่อไม่กี่ชั่วโมงมานี้
